Snow a la Mode

November 3rd, 2008 12:03pm
Snow Magazine Party

This Wednesday, November 5th its going to SNOW in Miami. No, no we’re not talking about blankets of frozen H2O covering our precious beaches; we’re referring to Snow a la Mode. Plum TV and Snow Magazine, the source for all things concerning the chilled liquid and the fashions that surround it, are throwing a cocktail party and fashion show to debut the upcoming skiwear collection. While the idea of wearing anything more than a single sheer layer of clothing seems alien to us, a chic soiree by the Gansevoort South pool is just our style. The event kicks off at 6 pm with a runway show at 7:30. After you’ve had your fill of champagne and gorgeous models head on over to the after-party at Napapijri on Lincoln Road from 8:30 to 10:30.

Funkshion Goes Red And Green

October 3rd, 2008 11:50am
Saya Fashion

A model wears the latest fashions by designer SAYA.

No, it’s not Christmas yet!

But for the fashion world, red and green adds a new whole meaning that is greater than Santa Claus and his “deer” friends. Every season, Funkshion brings some funk to fashion by bringing us the latest of the hottest designers’ collection.

This time, however, Funkshion is not just bringing fashion awareness. Instead, Fashion Week is joining philanthropic and environmental efforts by incorporating them into the shows.

Just like the fashion world, green represented corruption, money, materialism, and greed. Luckily for the color, environmentalists have been able to redefine it by making it their own. For this Fall season, Funkshion has joined forces with Clean Planet Funding to make our world “greener” (and by this I mean making our environment cleaner!).

Their three environmental goals are listed on their website:

(1) to reduce the carbon footprint of this show with the ultimate goal of attaining carbon neutrality for future events

(2) to educate Fashion Week Miami Beach and the world about the social, environmental, and economic benefits of building green

(3) to explain why an integrated and collaborative approach to green building is necessary for a genuinely sustainable and financially sound green project. We applaud this green team for their contributions and efforts! The team will be available in the Clean Planet Lounge, and throughout the show, to discuss sustainability with you.

If green is to environment, then red must be referencing to… cardiovascular disease.

The event initiated Miami’s first ever Red Dress Fashion Show yesterday (Thursday, October 2nd, 2008). All the dresses showcased were (obviously) red and they were all donated by the world’s top fashion designers including Marc Jacobs, DVF, Custo Barcelona, Fisico by Cristina Ferrari, ABS, and many others. This fashion show also raised money for the American Heart Association.

Trends: Hookah Smokin’ The Beach

September 10th, 2008 4:37pm
Hookah

Shisha—better known as hookah—has infiltrated South Beach by becoming one of the trendiest activities in people’s nightlife “to-do” list. Perhaps it has to do with it having an 18-and-up age requirement causing many teenagers and college students becoming attracted to the luxury… but they are not the only ones. This has also become an activity that many business executives enjoy on a weekend night after a long week of deadlines and appointments.

Hookah has been around for about a thousand years… but in the Middle East. A couple of years ago, they became popular in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, and it has recently migrated to South Florida.

Although it is a fact that the water-filtered shisha cools the smoke, it still does not change the tobacco-nicotine content in it. Smoking hookah may not have the same strength as a cigarette, but it, too, can become addictive… especially when the smoke can be enhanced with artificial flavoring.

Hookah can be an individual activity, especially in the Middle East (where a personal hookah can cost $1 USD).

But here in America, hookah has become more of a social event…

List of some places that offer hookah in Miami Beach:

  • DELIDO BEACH CLUB AT THE RITZ-CARLTON 1 LINCOLN RD., MIAMI BEACH; 786-276-4000.
  • D'VINE HOOKAH LOUNGE 445 LINCOLN RD., MIAMI BEACH; 305-534-1414.
  • TANTRA 1445 PENNSYLVANIA AVE., MIAMI BEACH; 305-672-4765.

Earthdance Miami

September 8th, 2008 9:10am
Earthdance Miami

Earthdance Miami takes place Saturday, September 13, 2008.

Despite the granola name, Earthdance is not just for hippies. Absolutely anyone who dreams of a greener and more peaceful earth (that means you!) should take part in this unifying celebration to help raise awareness. Presented in association with Plum TV, Earthdance will definitely get you moving with live hip-hop, Latin, Reggae, and other more obscure genres played by Miami local bands including Locos Por Juana, Lanzallamas Monofonicas, ¡Mayday!, and others. However, the highlight of the event will be the Prayer for Peace, which will take place simultaneously at over three hundred fifty locations around the world. The Miami time is set at 7 pm, so if you would like to be a part of this unique moment, be sure to arrive before then. For families who would like to join in on the festivities, children's activities will be provided from three to seven o'clock.

Headlining September's Wynwood Gallery Walk, Earthdance will be held indoors in air-conditioned Soho Studios in Wynwood, located at 2136 NW First Avenue. Guests are urged to bring blankets or towels for their own comfort. Food, soft drinks, beer, wine and sake will be on sale. The price is $20 at the door or $10 if you RSVP to earthdance@gmail in advance. As a bonus, guests will receive a reusable gift bag stuffed with green goodies to enjoy, so don't miss out!
