Election Day Watch Parties

American Flag

Not since the Boston Tea Party have party and politics been so intertwined. On the eve of this historical race of the White House, Election Day watch parties seem to be a trend sweeping across the country. Here on the beach, we’re no exception to making a party (bonus points if it surrounds a monumental event). Now that our country is on pins and needles waiting to see if the US will have its first African-American Commander in Chief or a woman as Vice Prez, a drink is definitely needed (as if we needed to give you a reason).
Lavish Tuesdays at Grass Lounge offers a White House-ready dress code and a relaxed ambiance for watching the polls-perfect for when liquor courage gives patrons something to debate about. While the rest of the country awaits the tallies from the west coast, Sushi Samba Dromo patrons can cast their votes with one of two signature cocktails: the Maverick ignites patriots with muddled raspberries, rum, triple sec, grenadine, and unsweetened white tea, while the Obamarama satisfies change with a frosty blend of muddled lemon, blueberries, and sugar with Pearl blueberry vodka, blue Curacao, and club soda. Trump International Beach Resort’s Lime Lounge will also feature drinks inspired by the two leading parties and Independents. Last (but certainly not least), what’s politics without a little scandal? For those who congratulated instead of condemning during the Lewinsky era, then Churchill’s presents HollyHood Burlesque is definitely your scene.

Celebrating TiramesU’s “Venti Anni” in South Beach

September 19th, 2008 10:49am
tiramisU 3

Venti is not merely a Starbucks size cup! For Italians and everyone else, twenty years is a lifetime… and for teenagers, it marks the end of awkward years! But there wasn’t anything awkward about the TiramesU (referring to the restaurant… though the delicious dessert served at the end of the night was anything BUT awkward!).

TiramesU is the famous northern Italian eatery currently located in Lincoln Road. As one of the most popular restaurants in South Beach, it has been in business for twenty years (that’s right… venti anni!); however, it was originally situated in the corner of Ocean Drive and 5th Avenue back in 1988, and then relocated to its current site on 721 Lincoln Road in 1997.

It has been twenty years of success for this restaurant, which would become the first of many more for co-owner Graziano Sbroggio. Sbroggio and his partners, the Graspa Group, now manage and own several restaurants—Le Bon, Spris, The Van Dyke Café, and Segafredo—all of them following the pioneer to Lincoln Road.

This is why last night Sbroggio had every reason to celebrate the anniversary of TiramesU among his closest friends—that is approximately 1,000 people invited—including restaurant staff, loyal customers, local business leaders, and my father who happens to be a fellow restaurateur.

The event took place at the sensational Botanical Garden in Miami Beach, which meant that everything was out in the open. Unfortunately, the uninvited decided to arrive at the same time everyone did at 7pm. But the rain did not stop us from savoring the delectable hors d’ oeuvres—including caprese kabob, venison, salmon with brie, crabcake, shrimp cocktail, and polenta with gorgonzola—and all the food available—a wide selection of pastas and oven-baked pizzas, risotto ai funghi, and several types of seafood and meat—and finally, an open bar featuring the restaurant’s signature drinks, including the infamous blue lagoon, bellinis, rossinis, and prosecco.

Hundreds of people resorted eating and drinking under umbrellas while the stylish décor was unappreciated and the spacious furniture remained empty.

Despite of the unwelcoming weather, the food and the drinks kept everyone calm and happy. The atmosphere was pleasant and did I mention that the food was great?

At the time of dessert, the rain was long gone and the party got started with live music and a message by Sbroggio. Briefly, he thanked everyone who has supported him throughout the 20 years of TiramesU.

''I love what I do,'' Sbroggio said to The Miami Herald. ''I don't know how to do anything else.''

South Beach Has Some Competition

something delicious

Mmmmm. Doesn't that look tasty?

With famous restaurants closing their doors in South Beach, the industry does not seem to be on solid ground. But in an optimistic note, new restaurants have been opening in the cozy Coconut Grove in a matter of six months. This new “menu” of restaurants is giving both Miami residents and visitors more places to check out other than in South Beach.

Feeling like having a drink and some Peruvian ceviche? Pisco Seafood Bar & Grille 3310-B Mary Street, Coconut Grove, FL 33133, (305) 447-9222

Bertoni Brick Oven Pizza and Lounge opened in May. If you blink a second when passing by it, you might miss it. Let’s just say that it can be described as a “hidden treasure,” standing right behind Dolce Vita Gelato

For a fusion of Italian, French, and Moroccan food: George's in the Grove, 3145 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove, FL 33133, (305) 444-7878

For an upscale authentic Italian dining experience… and some steak, try Cita’s Italian Chophouse, 3176 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove, FL 33133, (305) 446-2207

Stay on the look out for the upcoming openings of these:

Crazy Pianos: Replacing the old Café Tu Tu Tango space in CocoWalk, Crazy Pianos will be a restaurant and a “dueling-pianos-bar concept from the Netherlands.”

Jacob's in the Grove
: Neighboring George’s in the Grove and Cita’s Italian Chophouse, Jacob’s in the Grove will be a Swiss restaurant situated next door to a chocolate shop.

Food Goes Green

August 13th, 2008 10:59am
Veggie Food

Now that Miami Spice Month is heating up, we're a little concerned about what all these dining deals are going to do to our waistline. Since Miami is bikini season year-round, we've decided to "go green" with our eating habits. While meat-eaters may be apprehensive about converting to herbivore, many restaurants in Miami have added vegetarian and vegan options to their menus, and are meeting rave reviews! John Schott of Lifefood Gourmet educated Daybreak on the benefits of a raw food diet and, thanks to vegan-friendly places like Art of Food Café, we can enjoy all the flavor of our favorite dishes for half the fat and none of the guilt. Mmmmm.
